guidelines for max volume sizes

I suspect that it's also in part to what Transarc's AFS backup system can
handle.  But I have little experience with that stuff, so I can't say for
certain.

We have a handful of volumes over 8G.  Our biggest volume is 50G.  We don't try
to backup anything over a few gigs, just because it slows down the level 0
dumps.  [This will likely change as the hardware we use for backups gets 
faster.]

We've made sure the big volumes are moveable.  They're probably restorable from
backup, but since we don't back them up, we've not had occassion to try.
